Most times, my photo journeys take me on short hikes or day hikes, so I carry a monopod, instead of lugging a tripod around. The monopod does well, except for getting down to ground level. I needed a small (mini) tripod that would give me a stable platform at ground level, and be compact and lightweight. The Manfrotto Pixi Evo is every thing I was hoping for.
The Pixi Evo fits nicely in the side pocket of my Lowepro Hatchback backpack, creating a snag-free carrying option and easy access. Folded, the tripod is about inches long by inches at its widest point. Weighing in at just over half a pound ( oz.), the Pixi Evo is barely noticeable.
While not as precision as the ballhead on my large Manfrotto tripod, the functionality of the Pixi Evo's ballhead is wonderful, especially considering its compact size. The locking screw knob is large enough for making easy adjustments and holds the camera firmly in place when tightened. It also allows for shooting portrait, when the legs are extended.
Stability of the Pixi Evo is great. It would probably teeter over with a huge lens on the camera, but it handles my D3300 with 55-200mm lens without any problems. And lets face it, that is probably about as much lens as you'd be using with this small of tripod anyway.
The legs have two adjustments. They can be opened to the tripods normal stance, or layed out flatter with the slide switch on the side. Also each leg can independently be lengthened to any of five positions. This gives additional height, but also adds different stability options for uneven surfaces.
Additional features include a 1/4 inch screw for the camera and rubber feet.
I couldn't ask for anything more from the Manfrotto Pixi Evo. It fits my needs and more. Whether I am taking a macro shot at ground level, using it from a table top, or the top of a boulder, it's lightweight, compact size, functionality and versatility make it perfect.
