Quality and functions
When I got this product, I was very curious about the stability and speeds. I am a bit disappointed when I clamped it to my iMac and it constantly fell of. I tried to clamp it on the centre of the iMac, the left and right side but I didn’t clamp to it. It stay very well in place when you don’t plug a USB flash drive in, but when you plug something in, it falls of the iMac immediately. The looks of the USB hub are quite good! Aluminium materials and USB with a nice white edge around the ports. Maybe Satechi could make the clamp plate a bit longer so it would stay in place. A little bit disappointed in this product.
You don’t need to install software or something else. It’s really easy to install the USB hub: plug and play! No need to install software or other stuff. This USB hub is designed for accessing all of your devices like a external hard drive, USB flash drive, camera, keyboard, printers, scanners and all the things you can imagine that has a USB plug on it. When I use the hub without clamped on to the iMac, the connecting is very stable! They did a good job on the hub itself, but the clamp function isn’t good. Plugging a cable into the hub is a bit stiff and you need to push a bit harder than normal to hear the ‘click’ sound, so you know that the cable is connected.
Please note that a wireless device may not work. You should connect the wireless device to a USB port on your computer for a flawless experience. The little blue indication light isn’t really disturbing for me. The hub stays on when you are in sleep mode.
After 1 hour connected to my computer, the temperature is normal, it doesn’t heat up when doing heavy transfers or leaving your device in the hub all day long. Long transfers to USB flash drives are no problem for this hub.
Speeds
On the box it says the USB hub can provide data rates up to ! This is 10 times faster than an average USB port. Transferring your data to a external drive is done within a blink of an eye. Here you can find my speed tests made with ‘Blackmagic Disk Speed Test’:
USB flash drive transferring a 1 GB file: write and read.
USB flash drive transferring a 2 GB file: write and read.
USB external hard drive (unpowered) transferring a 1GB file: write and read.
USB external hard drive (unpowered) transferring a 2GB file: write and read.
USB external hard drive (powered) transferring a 1GB file: write and read.
USB external hard drive (powered) transferring a 2GB file: and read.
Charging
It does charge my mobile phone (iPhone 6).
It does not charge the iPad (iPad Mini 1st gen.) But it does sync the iPad.
The iPhone nor iPad didn’t disconnect when syncing with iTunes.
It all went very fast and I didn’t notice any difference when syncing it with the computer.
The clamp
Like I wrote, the clamp isn’t very useful and falls off very quick. Satechi could fix this by making the front clamp plate a little bit longer. The idea to make a product like this is genius, I never saw a design like this, but the function of the clamp is the only problem I have experienced with this hub.
Pros
It’s made out of aluminum, no cheap material were found in this product!
When you are adjusting the angle of your iMac, the changes from angle too because it’s attached to your iMac.
The hub stays on even when your computer is in sleep mode, this is my biggest pro on this product.
The design is very good and many people will ask you where you bought it.
It can handle different hard drives at the same time without disconnecting or losing a lot of speed.
Very good transfer speeds for a 4-port unpowered USB hub.
Cons
The clamp function isn’t very useful, it falls off immediately.
A little bit heavy, maybe this is one of the problems that cause the hub to fall.
Can’t charge the iPad, it can only sync!
