Compact, Extremely Protective, Excellent Fit! (Sony HDR-CX160).
This is by far the best case I have found for toting with me in the most compact way and offering the most protection. It is loads better than the "sleeve" that offers only scratch protection. It fits my HD camcorder with default battery attached. It is so protective, easy to open and insert & remove the camera, and compact. I trust it in my carry on luggage and is great for throwing in a purse. This is pretty much perfect for when you only need to carry the camera for the day. It does not hold cords, chargers, extra batteries, large batteries, or perhaps even extra memory cards. But for daily use, it is exactly what I wanted and I leave all the cords in the hotel room.
EASE OF USE
When you unzip (around 3 sides), you open and there is an inner fabric compartment that is attached to the top that tilts up to face you so you can easily drop a camera in or take it out. The room beneath is not meant for storing anything else as the pouch tilts back down when you close it. This little touch makes it that much more convenient. There are no other pouches, zippers, or anything. Just drop it in or take it out. I have a little cloth pouch I use to store the battery separately on top of my camera when I want to detach it (not that you have to detach it) but so that it doesn't scratch the camera. There is only enough room for the default battery, and maybe a little room to fit a slightly larger battery, but definitely not the largest batteries. There is absolutely no room for cords. The shoulder strap is sufficient to sling over my shoulder and light enough to be no bother while walking around. When stopping for dinner or a show, I just drop it into my wife's purse.
CONSTRUCTION & STRAP
The two main sides are a very firm plastic shell that protect extremely well. The narrow sides are lined with thick padding. The inner pouch is of a decent fabric. This is going to be very safe in there. This is tougher than most cases I have. The narrow sides are a little flexible and so is the inner pouch, so you have some room to play with. But for maximum protection, you probably don't want it in contact on both ends at the same time, but is still better than a simple sleeve. The handle is quite comfortable and actually can be pulled out or pushed down through flexible holes that accept or let out the handle. The shoulder strap is very basic, but along the lines you would expect for this price as a simple strap. Its all nylon strap has no pad for extra comfort, but is slim and light so that it doesn't take up noticeable space of its own in a purse. The strap would rub a little on your neck of thrown across your head and hung across your body. I just let it nestle under the edge of my jacket collar so that all I felt was my jacket collar as nicer fabric. In the summer with a T-shirt, I suspect it may not be the most comfortable strap. You can always replace the strap.
DIMENSIONS
In my own measuring (considering that the case is somewhat flexible), I found the following. The exterior measures 6 3/8" wide, 4 3/8" tall (plus a little for the handle), 3 1/8" thick. The interior pouch dimensions are 4 7/8" wide (but flexible), 2 1/4 to 2 3/4" thick (but flexible) (just 2 1/4" at corners), and 2 1/2 to 3" deep (2 1/2" to fabric pocket edge but room to spare above and3" to side of case).
EXAMPLE: SONY HDR-CX160
It fits the Sony HDR-CX160 HD Camcorder (Black)/Midnight Blue with its attached NP-FV50 battery perfectly. However, I don't know that it would fit with the NP-FV70 Battery attached. There is room to spare so it might fit the FV70, but would rely on the flexible case and probably be in contact with both ends of the case which diminishes the protection a bit, but probably at least as good as a sleeve. It would not support the NP-FV100 battery attached. Keep in mind that the Sony camcorder manual states to remove the battery immediately after use, so for larger batteries, you probably want to detach and carry separately anyway maybe in another pouch. Honestly, at least within the same day, I just stick the whole camera with batter attached in for being able to quickly continue shooting at a moments notice without fumbling with connecting the battery again, and then just take it off at night.
