I got these for a $35 pair of Sennheiser CX 215 Earbuds. Even thought that specific model is listed as compatible on this package, the foam tips barely fit on them -- I really had to shove them on. I ruined one of the foam tips trying to get it on (lucky they come in a pack of 3). Now I'd like to get them off, but there's no way to do it without destroying the foam.
The comfort is pretty good, but they are are slightly more difficult to get in your ears than the silicone tips. With these, you have to compress the foam and then you have about a 3-4 seconds to get them in your ears before they expand. If you miss the window, you need to start over (you probably know this drill from regular foam earplugs). Then you need to hold them in your ears for 2-3 seconds until they expand. On the plus side, once you do get them in your ears, you barely feel the foam tips at all; unlike the silicone tips which seem to put pressure on the ears the whole time they're in there. On the negative side, if you need to adjust them in your ears you can't just fiddle with them like you might with silicone. You have to take the earbud out, compress it again, and stuff it back in your ear.
The isolation is pretty good, but not as good as with the silicone tips.
These particular negatives bugged me because I tend not to wear the earbuds very long, mostly 10-15 minute chunks. If you leave them in for longer periods of time, the kind of issues I mentioned probably won't bother you much. Except for the part about them barely fitting -- that is really obnoxious.
I've had a set of Beats by Dre: Power Beats for over a year. From the beginning i felt that they were lacking in bass compared to all the other headsets and earbuds. but i was willing to compromise the bass for a little more security (secure to my ear) and durability since i would be wearing them in the gym. When i lost the little rubbery tips that come from the factory i looked into replacement tips. Luckily I found these! They created a good tight enough seal in the ears that I hear the bass that was lacking before without compromising comfort or causing that chafing feeling with prolonged use.
The foam is dense so it may be a little uncomfortable to some. But if you're like me and you've worn earbuds for years these wont be hard to get used to. I bought medium because i use the medium size tips that come on most earbuds and these are sized well enough. I chose Active S-400s because they said it's compatible with Power Beats and they're ideal for "active" wear. I haven't worn them to the gym yet so we'll see. I dont doubt they're durable but im rough with my stuff sometimes.
I find that the foam is dense enough to secure them even better than the cheap rubbery stuff that came from the factory yet soft enough so if you overestimated the size of your ear opening and bought a size too big then you wont find them unbearable. I haven't worn them to the gym yet but if i have any issues I'll update later.
Tried medium at first and just couldn't get a good seal. The large get a much better seal and really helps create a nice sound from my Sennheiser MM30G and Note 4. They are really good using for phone calls as well. Was hoping they would fit tight enough for use while running but just don't quite do it. It's a bit of a pain for them to snag on my collar or my hand catch the wire and it pull them out of my ear. And then have to squeeze them to push them in to get another good seal. After doing that a couple of weaks the foam really softens and makes it a bit more difficult to keep in. I would imagine part of the issue is the size of the earbuds. There are really small so there is nothing to hold them in place other than these tips. If I was reviewing just for the seal they provide to help with sound quality, it would be 4 or 5 stars but since these are the Active version of these, I can only give a 3. I use them daily for phone calls and music because I like them paired with my Sennheisers, but cannot recommend them for active use. I still have to use my Beats because they hold in my ears without needing the foam tips. Do prefer the sound of the Sennheisers with I have the seal right with these tips.
