I recently bought one of these to take on a tour of Italy. (I won't appear here as a "Verified Buyer" because my spouse has Prime and I don't, so for speedy delivery, it was purchased on the Prime account).
The fact that the mixer allows for an XLR connection and even provides Phantom Power was really attractive.
I used an LG G3 smartphone that was constantly encased in an Otterbox Defender case and the phone fit well, with a little - just enough - room to spare. That extra space was easily dealt with by a few turns of the thumbwheel.
I found the mics to be more useful than the in-phone mic because you can turn them so 1 points towards what is being shot, and 1 in the opposite direction, towards yourself, allowing you to provide some narration. (Now, in hindsight, having 2 Volume/Gain controls - one for each mic input - would make this even better for such situations).
I found it particularly useful when the tour was being led by a professional guide. The guide handed out radio receivers and earphones to everyone, and spoke into a headset mic while she explained the history of various sites. We listened through the earphones. Often, I was at the back of the pack, 30 or more feet away, often outdoors, and wrestling with all the ambient noise from the crowds, other tourists, etc; in a nutshell, too far away for any mic or even a professional sound engineer to deal with, short of using a wireless set-up. I used one of the included mics on the mixer, and a patch cord to connect the output from the radio receiver to the other mic input jack, and then plugged my earphones into the "Monitor" jack of the mixer. That allowed me to both hear and record the guide's narration while still recording my own comments and the ambient sound near me. Even with that, there were times when the guide's radio signal would drop out, but that was because I didn't keep up with the group. All this was fed through the mixer and recorded on the phone. (But I noticed that I was getting lots of stares from other tourists wondering what kind of rig I was using).
Wandering on our own and using only the 2 supplied mics, I did notice that there were a couple - though few - times when the meter wasn't registering a signal from one of the mics. Turning the mic, or pressing it into the jack slightly, would fix that. I found myself wondering if maybe the jacks that receive the mic plugs should grasp those plugs more firmly. Those times were few and far between.
Battery life was approx. 3 though I'll admit I had spares and didn't pay close attention to that, though there is a battery-level indicator, so you have some idea how much power is left.
If/when paired with the ikan FLY-X3-Plus 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer, and a way to connect the mixer to the handle and not the gimbal, I would imagine one could end up with some excellent footage and audio, worthy of even the best home-shot travel documentary. While I think the mixer provides better overall audio than the phone's native mic, the only thing I can think of that might make it better is if there were a small shotgun mic that could be used in addition to/instead of both of the supplied mics. (I have a very old, very small, SIma shotgun mic that I used with my first VHS camera from years ago, but it doesn't have the right 3-ring plug to use in the mixer, and requires a AAA battery, so I don't know the mixer would deal with that powered signal, if at all).
I haven't used it yet with a condenser mic or with Phantom Power, but plan to in the near future. Hopefully, once I do, I can add to/update this review.
I would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants better audio from a smartphone. Even better would be if they sold the mixer, mics, and cable(s) separately, and convinced iKan to add a cold-shoe to mount the mixer at the top of the handle of the FLY-X3-Plus rather than on the gimbal.
DISCLAIMER: I purchased the product but have not yet used it, I am still working on my setup. But here is what I can tell you from my cursory review of the product.
1. This is my second Saramonic product I have purchased, I also have the Saramonic SmartRig XLR Adapter, and I love it. It works great and produces a great sound with my Rode Reporter mic and my iPhone.
2. As with the XLR adapter, Saramonic takes great care in packaging their products and the SmartMixer was no exception. I have attached pictures for your review.
3. I did at the very least put both my iPhone 5 with a thick rubber case as well as my Samsung Galaxy in the Smart Rig and it fit quite nicely and it was secure. This is not like all of others that i have seen where you stretch the item to fit your phone. You actually tighten it to make it fit your device. You couldn't use an iPad because it won't open that far, but you could definitely use a larger smartphone.
3. This Smartmix is very sturdy the components are metal with high end plastic and they provide you will all of the chords you will need. I also love the fact that I can use an XLR Mic with this also with the supplied mini XLR cable.
While I haven't used it yet, I like what I see so far and I am sure once I get going I will be changing my from a 4-5. There is nothing else like this on the market! Way to go Saramonic.
My future plans are to also add a Vello V Rig Triple Shoe Bracket so that I can add a shotgun Mic and an LED light to take better video.
ATTN: Saramonic, I would certainly be willing to trial any new products you have in the future.
