There are a lot of fake 1TB and 2 TB flash drives on Amazon. This listing is a good listing for a legit device. The Kingston 1TB and 2TB flash drives are well documented as being a real thing. They cost an arm and a leg because they are cutting edge capacity for this size of a storage device and there isn't a large enough market for them yet to increase production capacity and bring the price down. But they are real drives.
However, all listings for 1TB and 2TB thumb drives that cost less than several hundred dollars are fake. ALL OF THEM. Be careful when you try to find a better deal on a 2TB flash drive. As of the date of this review Kingston is the only company that makes a 2TB thumb drive (or a 1TB thumb drive for that matter) If SanDisk makes one next month that's $50 cheaper, it might be legit as SanDisk is a reliable name brand. But if Brand X that you've never heard of sells one today for $1,400 cheaper, it's guaranteed to be a fake.
As for this drive if you happen to have an extra $1,500 burning a hole in your pocket and decide that you just can't live without this bulky 2TB thumb drive (bear in mind it's Andre the Giant's ) then by all means. Buy with confidence.
You can use it for a variety of things. Like storing every book every written, one third of the US Tax code, or writing down Pi to the 2,199,023,255,552th decimal place. (I know we've all had that need at least once in our lives) Or you could smuggle the plans for the Death Star out of the Empire's Control. This drive ought to have the necessary capacity to assist in any rebellion's most common needs. plus enough to store a MKV video file so you can watch a movie on your long trip to a rebellion controlled system.
But before you hand the drive off to one of your operatives to do that, do yourself a favor and test it as soon as it arrives to make sure it's a true 1TB/2TB capacity drive. A thorough way to test it is with a utility app called "h2testw". (For Mac users there is an alternative option called F3. It does basically the same thing) You can download both test apps free. Just do a search for it on any search engine and you'll find them. That app writes single bit data to the drive until it's full, then it reads that data back to make sure it's readable. It will tell you what the actual capacity of this disk is and verify that every writable bit of space on the disk is functioning properly. It will take you many hours to fully test a true 2TB drive.
What that app will also do is show you if your disk is actually a smaller capacity drive that's been hacked to read as a 1 or 2 TB disk while it only has an actual storage capacity of maybe 16GB. While this listing looks totally legit and this is an actual product, there are nefarious people in this world who will try to trick you with fake products that look like real products. (I are thinking "What? Dishonest people here on planet Earth? Unheard of!! But it's true. It came as quite a shock to me as well.)
If you try to use a fake capacity flash drive your rebellion will be crushed before you can engage your old Jedi friend to deliver your smuggled data to your rebellion's engineers. And then the whole galaxy will continue to live under the heavy hand of an undemocraticly elected military dictatorship. All because you didn't spend 1 day testing your hardware. Don't be that guy!
What the people who make the fake drives do is take a small capacity drive they can buy cheap at wholesale prices that is maybe an 8GB drive, and hack the control chip that is used to tell the computer it's being used in what the capacity of the disk is. So the 8GB drive looks to be a 1TB drive when you plug it into your computer. And your computer will try to write 1TB of data to that drive. The problem is that after 8GB, the card is full and it's just overwriting the previous data. Your file structure will be there and it will look like all your files are there, but the files themselves will be empty or badly corrupted. And your valuable data will be lost forever, including the file that shows where that vulnerability in the thermal exhaust ports is that can lead to a chain reaction that destroys a large space station.
It's the same concept (thought completely different on a physical level) as putting a 10 gallon label on a 1 gallon bucket. You can pour 10 gallons of water into it, but when you're done the bucket is never going to have more than 1 gallon of water in it. And it won't just be the first gallon you poured in. It will be a mix of water from all 10 gallons. The rest of the water will be in an unrecoverable puddle next to the bucket. When putting 1TB of data on a 8GB card you will have a mix of data from all 1TB of your transfered files and the 8GB of data that are stored on the card will just be an unusable mess. Your file tree will probably show up and make it look like all your files are there, but none of them will be viewable/usable.
While these scammers usually take readily available normal sized 8GB drives and hack them to read as 2TB drives, someone will eventually make a fake Kingston 1 inch square form factor and try to pass it off as legitimate. I don't think you should be scared of buying from this listing. But I absolutely think you should test and verify what you've bought. That goes for this 2TB or 1TB drive or any 16GB drive you get at Wal Mart for $6. Test it before you rely on it. Even if you have a legitimate drive manufacturing defects to happen. It's better to find that out before you use it than to find out when the fate of freedom in the galaxy hinges on your storage device.
