I am a part time professional photographer. As any photographer can attest, you will one day find yourself surrounded by many gear bags. It just happens. After culling my most recent collection, I was left with a Domke 700-02A F-2 Bag (Brown Waxwear Finish), a Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Black), Lowepro Stealth Reporter D650 AW Camera Bag, a Timbuk2 Commute Laptop Messenger Bag (modified with a Timbuk2 Snoop Camera Insert), and now the Lowepro x300 that replaced my Lowepro Pro Roller x200 Camera Bag (Black). As any photographer will tell you, there are specific bags that meet specific needs and your needs change all the time.
I upgraded from the Lowepro x200 (older model than the current line). However, the upgrade was of very minor benefit and I would not recommend it to anyone already owning the X200. The older series of the Pro Rollers had a slightly different design. For example, their was no ad-hoc backpack option though the compartment was removable. The wheels, though not replaceable, were slightly larger. There was also two interior flaps to the bag, offering slightly more space for smaller items. In my opinion, the interior size of the X300 and X200 (older line) is so similar I can barely tell the difference; so, if you are looking for a major size upgrade, you will be disappointed. Comparison between the older X200 line and the new X300 aside, the Pro Roller X300 is a great bag if you have the need. As you can see from the photo I uploaded, quite a bit of gear fits in the bag. Of course, this is not a street shooter's bag, in which I prefer my Domke F-2. More likely, a pro wedding photographer may find use for at least two or three of these bags at an event. It's a great bag to stage from; for example, loading all your gear to travel with and then using a smaller bag for daily use- pulling gear from the X300. The bag also functions very well as a place to keep your expensive gear at your house, centralized and safe.
The bag provides great functionality and customization with the typical Lowepro quality you would come to expect. Like previous models, this model has a kickstand to keep the bag at an angle as you work from it. It can also function as an ad-hoc light-stand and tripod, which you will eventually find useful. The padding of the bag provides exceptional protection and the interior organization compartments are incredibly useful. Unlike older models, the material behind the organization compartments is bright, making it easier to see any dark or small items. The addition of memory card holders as part of the bag is a very nice addition as is the flap pocket and business card holder. I found the wheels too small as did other reviewers. The wheels are great for paved use, but nearly useless on gravel or grass. I also believe the bag could have been a little bigger interior wise.
Summation: all in all the bag is a great buy providing great Lowepro quality that would withstand service in a war zone. I cannot comment on how the bag travels on airlines since I have not yet traveled with it.
I have a few smaller bags, each serving a purpose.
The past year or so I have been carrying three bags on a small ladder kart to haul my gear around at weddings, baptisms, etc.
I felt like I would either forget which pouch had items in it or that it looked unprofessional to carry a mishmosh of bags.
I was thinking of going with Pelican hard cases, or even Tamrac as I prefer their bags over Lowepro.
I wish this bag had larger wheels because it seems as though the bag would wear down if dragged at the wrong angle.
Apparently, Lowepro thought of this too because the bottom has hard plastic to prevent any material from ripping.
The wheels are removable which is a big improvement over bags they made in the There aren't an abundance of pockets which I was shocked with, but in thinking about it it's less stuff to lose (I cannot tell you how many lens pens I have).
These companies always supply tons of dividers which I always end up ripping out. I am sure that many of us can make our own bags with extra dividers we have laying around!
The zippers on the bag are rugged and I have no doubt they will stand the test of time.
A lot of thought went into this bag from the kickstand and tripod mounts I will hardly utilize to the handles on three sides of the bag for easy lifting (if you discount the weight).
Make no mistake about it, this bag is HEAVY and is NOT an everyday bag. However, for weddings, etc. I highly recommend it.
